Elaine Mitchener: [NAMES] an evocation

22 November 2019 - 23 November 2019

Friday 22 November, 6-9pm & Saturday 23 November 10.30am-4.30pm | Free Entry

[NAMES] an evocation is a sound installation by artist Elaine Mitchener using material drawn directly from Christer Petley’s research on plantation owner/slaveholder Simon Taylor’s inventory of ‘goods’ for sale which included approximately 2,000 enslaved Africans.

In 2016, Mitchener recorded each name (a process which took 3 hours) and used this as a backdrop for a durational performance piece at SPILL Festival, Ipswich. A new 20 minute sound piece evoking the names of so many people who have been deliberately forgotten.

This event is part of the University of Southampton's Human Worlds Festival and Hands-On Humanities Day. More information and view the full programme at: www.humanworldsfestival.com.
