John Hansard Gallery shortlisted for the Freelands Foundation Award 2019

05 June 2019

John Hansard Gallery and University of Southampton are excited to announce that the Gallery has been shortlisted for the Freelands Foundation Award this year.

The Freelands Award was established in 2016 by the Freelands Foundation with the aim of raising the profile of mid-career female artists and supporting the work of cultural institutions outside of London. The value of the Freelands Award is £100,000, of which £25,000 is given directly to the artist chosen by the organisation. Alongside John Hansard Gallery, the 2019 nominees include Firstsite, Colchester, The Hepworth Wakefield, Yorkshire, The MAC, Belfast, MK Gallery, Milton Keynes, Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne.

Director Woodrow Kernohan commented: ‘We are absolutely thrilled to be shortlisted for this year’s Freelands Award – and in such good company. We launched the John Hansard Gallery in our new city centre home just over a year ago, and are delighted to receive this acknowledgement from the Freelands Foundation. Through our programme we aim to celebrate the rich diversity of contemporary art, and are proud that more than half of the artists we present are female. We look forward to being part of the selection process alongside the fantastic shortlist.’

The Freelands Foundation’s mission is to support artists and cultural institutions, to broaden audiences for the visual arts and to enable all young people to engage actively with the creation and enjoyment of art. Critical research plays a vital role throughout the Foundation, being able to articulate the value that art and culture bring to society, creating positive interventions and support structures in order to provoke change and new ways of thinking and learning.

The winner of the Freelands Award 2019 will be announced in autumn 2019.
